Postern Hill campsite, Savernake Forest, Wiltshire
Pitching your tent at Postern Hill is perfect for a ‘get away from it all’ break, situated within the stunning Savernake Forest. Privately owned and run by the Forestry Commission, the lush green canopy of the ancient oak trees provides natural shelter, and the sunlight filtering through to the forest floor creates a magical scene perfect for walking and cycling.
As well as being located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, most of Savernake Forest is a registered Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Although this is primarily related to its rare lichens and fungi, campers may be lucky enough to encounter other rare wildlife including Hawfinches, Redstarts, Nightjars and Red-tail Kites. The campsite is a fantastic spot for watching bats with 11 different species known to visit, so why not leave your tent doors open as dusk falls and experience the wonders of the forest at night?
Dogs are welcome here and there is a toilet block with hot and cold running water. There are no showers on the campsite but there is a leisure centre just 1.5 miles away that provides showers at a reasonable price for campers.
It is just a 10 minute walk to the newly-opened Tesco, and a 20 minute walk will take you into the picturesque market town of Marlborough. This pretty town offers a range of shops, restaurants and pubs. Nearby attractions include Longleat Safari Park, Avebury Stone Circle, Stonehenge and the Kennet and Avon canals.
Each Camping in the Forest campsite offers miles of woodland trails that are directly accessible from your tent, so why not take the time to explore the unique and natural beauty of the Forestry Commission woodlands on two wheels?
