The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway is a timeless way to discover North Wales as it stops off at vintage stations and historic towns, waiting for you to explore. Your journey starts here:
Porthmadog
The busy harbour town of Porthmadog is the hub of the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway and is home to a picturesque port, a Maritime Museum and a much-loved landmark, known locally as The Cob – a mile long embankment that stretches across Glaslyn estuary.
On one side, the skyline is dominated by the monumental mountain of Moel y Gest, which towers 262 metres above the town. Rich in heritage, culture and community, Porthmadog is packed full of charm and is worth exploring as part of your Welsh Highland Heritage Railway adventure.
The surrounding landscape is perfect terrain for walking and cycling, too. Porthmadog is the gateway to the Wales Costal Path and the Lôn Ardudwy bike route.
Next Stop, Beddgelert
The village of Beddgelert is a place of legend, and a gateway to mount Snowdon. Several of the routes ascending England and Wales’ highest peak start at Beddgelert. Take in spectacular views of Snowdonia National Park as you trek the ancient paths of the formidable mountain.
A mile south of the village, the river Glaslyn carves its way through the landscape to the Aberglasyn Pass, a famous Welsh beauty spot. The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway runs right through the Aberglasyn Pass, unveiling incredibly scenic views.
For a walking or cycling adventure, journey into Beddgelert Forest, where towering trees surround you on every side, before opening out into vast open meadows of outstanding natural beauty.
Now Calling at Rhyd Ddu
The charming village of Rhyd Ddu is home to the sparkling Lake of Llyn Cwellyn, which has existed since the Ice Age. Surrounded by 215 acres of unspoilt terrain, the lake is a piece of paradise in the heart of Snowdonia.
Rhyd Ddu village is another of Snowdon Mountain’s gateways, with a number of popular walking routes, including Moel Hebog, Yr Aran and the Nantlle Ridge, ascending to the peak, providing breathtaking views.
Now arriving at Waunfawr
Steeped in legend, the large village of Waunfawr is home to the exciting Bryn Pistyll nature park, which is packed full of things to see and do, including nature trails, woodland discovery walks, nurseries, gardens, a craft barn and an outdoor adventure playground.
Final stop, Caernarfon
The historic town of Caernarfon is the gem of North Wales, sitting at the heart of Snowdonia. Home to a majestic 13th century castle built by Edward I, and the ruins of a Roman Fort, Caernarfon’s historical story is incredibly fascinating. You can enjoy guided tours around the town, immersing yourself in its rich culture and heritage.
On the outskirts of the town, visit Gypsy Wood Park, a family friendly venue where you can explore the incredible wetlands, enjoy several outdoor adventure playgrounds and finish as you started by taking a ride on a train… Woody’s train, which takes you on a scenic tour of the park.
