Any barbecues used on our sites should be specifically designed and used only for the purpose of cooking food (i.e. not firepits). They should be robust, secure and able to be raised off of the forest floor, there should be no damage or marks left on the ground where they have been used. In support of the New Forest Action Plan, we are asking campers not to bring disposable barbecues for their stay. We are also reminding campers that outside of our sites, no barbecues of any kind are now allowed anywhere in the New Forest.

Please do not feed, pet or approach the animals in and around the campsite; they may look friendly but are unpredictable and can bite and kick. Please keep all food sealed and out of reach of the ponies

Peaceful forest escape
/
I booked a weekend at Matley Wood last minute for some peace a quiet and to enjoy forest walks with my dog. Although there were plenty of other campers, the site was not crowded and I could find my own hide away, with space to feel at one with the woods. Easy access to water and bins and winding gravel tracks made it all easy. The birds, ponies and trees all around were idyllic. I had lots of great walks from the site and could pop into Lyndhurst for a cheeky coffee and cake . A wonderful weekend. The warden at Denny Wood was super friendly and helpful too. Will book agsin next season for sure.

Excellent friendly stay

Disappointed
/
First Morning an inconsiderate caravan owner decided to flout the rules and arrive outside my van at 7.15 am, 12am being the set arrival time, thus setting the dogs off and giving us a rude awakening, after another circuit to make sure of his spot he eventually began setting up lower down from us. I informed the warden and got no reply. So back to flouting the rules.....several dog owners thought they had the right to let their dogs roam free with out leads on, oblivious to the rules of camping in the forest. Unfortunately not having an on site warden has proved detrimental and spoilt our stay.

Peaceful site
/
Lovely peaceful site with great walks into the forest. Only downside we booked an XL grass pitch but when we arrived no pitch markings and when we arrived nobody seemed aware of different pitch sizes. Felt I had been conned into paying extra . When mentioned to chap that came around to ensure we had checked in , was told to take it up with the company !!!! In my opinion he was the company representative and should have dealt with it . Needs some kind of managing of arrivals and pitches . Otherwise very quiet and peaceful spot to stay.

Great site for escaping
/
We like Matley wood a lot as most of the sites are naturally spaced out. the ground does undulate - so be prepared to chock up and for puddles in the hollows. The drinking water tap is sited right next to the cdp , although there is a low wall between them i do not think this is ideal - especially as for our entire stay this time the chemical disposal unit was very smelly when i was standing filling from the drinking water tap. I think that given that a tap and a cdp are all the facilities you get on this site for £18 a night more consideration could be given to the hygiene issues of siting them so close to each other. this is not done on other sites we have visited.

Beautiful Magical wild woodland campsite
/
Matley Wood is a magical wild woodland site. There are no pitches - you're just asked not to pitch too close to other users. It was so peaceful camping under the trees - and we woke up to be surrounded by the amazing New Forest ponies - it was incredible and we will certainly be visiting again. As described, there are no built facilities at this site - you need to have on board facilities. But you can get drinking water and empty your chemical toilet onsite.

Beautiful

What a wonderful little location. For one night it was perfect but we wanted to stay longer. Wonderful view of the sunset across the forest. Very close to a village. Horses and wild life all around. Wonderful going to sleep hearing the animals and birds. Definitely book again. (If anyone came at that time and found a little blue dragon toy we would love it returned)

Confusing check in, camp site ok
/
We didn’t get off to a great start! The sign to get in was hidden in overgrowth so we had to turn around. Then when we went into the site there was no information on where to check in. We had to ask a fellow camper what to do. We had to leave the site and go to Derry Woods camp site, where we were told they weren’t checking in thisafternoon as it was their afternoon off and just to go and find a spot back in Marley Wood. We found a spot we liked and got ourselves comfortable. Then saw all the used toilet roll in the bushes all around. Not once we’re we asked if we had a toilet to use (we did) which was supposed to be checked. Site was quiet, elsan clean, water and rubbish facilities were good.
